However, it is not only insulin that is affected by a food intolerance. 5. Lack of insulin causes a loss of fat tissue triglycerides along with very high blood glucose levels because insulin is required for maintaining adequate fat stores. The second form of diabetes is called non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), type 2 diabetes, or maturity onset diabetes, and it usually develops in overweight adults. In this form of diabetes, the body produces adequate or even excessive insulin, but insulin receptors on cells do not function appropriately. According to a study from the University of Vancouver Medical School, vanadium itself can replace the insulin in those suffering from insulin-dependent diabetes (which accounts for 85 percent of all cases of diabetes). Taking a varying dose of vanadium and chromium for a period of four to six months makes it possible to gradually reduce the insulin dose required by the patient until it is no longer needed at all. At the same time it encourages the regeneration of pancreatic tissue that has been damaged by deficiencies of both of these trace elements. 10. Obesity or high blood pressure can restrict the flow of Insulin to muscle cells. Since fat cells may compete with other cells for insulin, having 300 times as many receptor sites for insulin as muscle cells, type 2 diabetes accelerates the accumulation of body fat, which in turn worsens the diabetes.

14. Simple carbohydrates, or sugars, are quickly absorbed by the body, resulting in a rapid elevation in blood sugar level, stimulating a corresponding excessive elevation in serum insulin levels. It is thought by some that the natural, simple sugars found in fruits and vegetables have an advantage over sucrose and other refined sugars, in that they are balanced by a wide range of nutrients which aid in the utilization of the sugars. 16. It is safe to say that carbohydrates trigger the release of insulin. As more carbohydrates are consumed, more insulin is produced. The current epidemic of obesity and diabetes in the United States indicates that we are asking our bodies to burn the wrong fuel — refined carbohydrates in this case. 17. A primary cause of insulin resistance is chromium deficiency. Insulin cannot do its job without chromium. Scientists at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), including Dr. Gary Evans, Ph.D., found that diets high in simple sugars trigger loss of chromium through the urine, which can further the problem of insulin resistance. When they consume carbohydrates, it results in a release of Insulin that is even greater than is needed, which in turn leads to even less of a feeling of satisfaction, so the urge to eat sets in again. Because of this, carbohydrate addicts end up trying to satisfy their hunger by eating more and more carbohydrates. 20. There is no question that a Type I diabetic requires insulin. Insulin preparations have been used in the treatment of diabetes since 1922. Since insulin is not absorbed orally, it must be injected. Insulin preparations come in concentrations of 100 units per milliliter (U-100) and 500 units per milliliter (U-500), but can differ in their source (beef, pork, or human synthetic insulin), duration of action (rapid, intermediate, or long-acting), and solubility (crystalline versus soluble). The human synthetic Insulin is gaining wider acceptance as the preferred source.
